“Now take Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister to Me as priest” (Exodus 28:1).
He was the only president of the United States who never ran for president. He was the only president who was unanimously elected both times he held office, receiving all of the electoral votes. He
also refused to be paid for the eight years he was commander in chief, only asking to be reimbursed for his expenses, which were never fully reimbursed. George Washington was first in many ways.
The first president was the first to suggest he be addressed as Mr. President. He fired the first shot that began the French and Indian War. He began the tradition to add “So help me God” to the Presidential Oath of Office at his inauguration. He established the two-term tradition for the presidency. And he wrote more letters (more than 20,000) than any other president in American history.
Aaron was chosen by God to be the first high priest in Israel. Along with his sons, the elder brother of Moses was set apart to minister in sacred things. Aaron was to be a mediator between humans and God. He offered sacrifices for sins to make reconciliation between the people and the Lord. The Hebrew word for “high” priest was sometimes interpreted as “first” priest. This office often stood next in rank, dignity, and influence to the king of Israel.
George Washington wore a distinctive blue wool coat uniform. So also, the high priest wore special garments to represent the holy office. Of significance was a “breastplate of judgment” worn around the neck and over the heart. “So, Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel over his heart before the Lord continually” (Exodus 28:30). Thus, he symbolized the work of Jesus, our great High Priest, in the heavenly sanctuary.
Isn’t it good to know that we have first place in Christ’s heart?
Dear Jesus, thank You for being my High Priest, standing in my place before the heavenly Father.
