Solomon, Part 1

Daily Devotional

Average reading time is about 3 minutes

“Behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you” (1 Kings 3:12).

If you met Alexis Martin for the first time when she was three years old, you would think she were a normal girl for her age. However, in 2014, she was considered one of the smartest toddlers in the world. Her parents never noticed anything abnormal about their brilliant child, until she began to recite her entire bedtime stories perfectly, even using the same inflection. When doctors tested her intelligence, she scored 160 IQ points. The average person’s IQ is 100.

At the age of three, Alexis was reading at a fifth-grade level. She taught herself Spanish and became the youngest member of Arizona’s Mensa chapter, an organization for people with IQs in the top 2 percent. IQ measures a person’s reasoning and problem-solving abilities. Most tests analyse a person’s visual, mathematical, and language skills, along with memory and processing speed.

Solomon would have broken all records for having a high IQ. When the young king took the place of his famous father, David, he felt inadequate. He told the Lord, “I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in” (1 Kings 3:7). When God promised to give Solomon whatever he asked for, the humble man replied, “Give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil” (verse 9). God was so pleased with his request that He promised to give the new ruler not only great wisdom, but riches and honour as well.

Our text for today indicates that nobody in all of human history had the intelligence of Solomon. Also, the Bible adds, “King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom. Now all the earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart” (1 Kings 10:23, 24).

The Lord is just as willing to give you wisdom—no matter what your age—if you humbly ask.

Lord, I need Your wisdom today. Please guide me with heavenly perception in all my decisions.
