Joseph, Part 3

Daily Devotional

Average reading time is about 3 minutes

“The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian” (Genesis 39:2).

Tim Lake of Arcadia, California, was fed up with having his mail stolen. So, he set up a video camera and captured footage of a woman stealing a package from his front porch. After reporting the theft to the police, Tim made full-colour posters of the woman carrying away his personal property and plastered them all over his neighbourhood. The bottom of the sheet stated, “I don’t know who you are. But I will look for you. I will find you, and I will convict you.”

Mail theft is a growing problem all over the United States. Thieves are often drug addicts looking for cash or checks. That’s why all your important documents (like bank and credit card statements) should be paperless. You can get a locking mailbox, but a security camera can help you catch them in the act.

Joseph lived with the knowledge that God’s eye was always on him. When he was sold as a slave in Egypt, little did he realize the seductive temptation that would be pushed on him by his master’s wife. How did Joseph respond? He would not betray the trust of his earthly master nor of his heavenly Father. “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9). When Potiphar’s wife took hold of him one day, he did what every godly man should do when tempted by lust—run!

The Lord does not need surveillance cameras to capture our actions. “There is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13). Joseph was a successful man because he served a God who watches over all things in heaven and on earth.

Lord, may I live today with the knowledge that every thought and behaviour is under your attentive care.
