“Zebulun shall dwell by the haven of the sea; He shall become a haven for ships, and his border shall adjoin Sidon” (Genesis 49:13).
A little-known cove in the small Bahamas out island of Eleuthera is considered by some as the world’s safest harbor. Hatchet Bay was created during World I when an eighty-foot rock cut was made to access the protected waters by a retired English army officer who wanted to carry stone out to ships for large construction projects. He planned to refill the cut but never got around to it.
For those who enjoy cruising in their yachts to secret places, the friendly people in Alice Town will make you glad you stopped in this protected harbor. Not only do they provide a dinghy dock with free moorings, but you can access piped water, a laundromat, and fresh produce all within walking distance. After you’ve stocked up on groceries, take a walk down Smile Street and over Happy Hill where you’re bound to meet some of the friendliest people in the world.
The tenth of Jacob’s twelve sons was named Zebulun, which means “exalted.” When Jacob blessed this last son of Leah, he foresaw his descendants as dwelling “by the haven of the sea” and becoming a “haven for ships.” Though the land of Zebulun during the conquest of Canaan was not next to the Mediterranean, its borders may have later changed.
The name Zebulun brings to mind pictures of God’s protective care for His children. David often wrote of the Lord as a covering for His people. “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust’” (Psalm 91:1, 2).
When the winds of strife blow against your life, don’t forget about a cove of safety where you can find shelter from the devil’s attacks. Your biblical map will lead you to this sacred harbor and into the protecting arms of your Father in heaven.
“The Lord’s our Rock, in Him we hide, a Shelter in the time of storm; secure whatever ill betide, a shelter in the time of storm.”
