NATURAL DISASTERS – WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

In the last decade, we have seen more droughts, more fires, more earthquakes, more cyclones, more hurricanes, more floods, and more tidal waves than ever before in human history [1,2].

The fire inferno that is raging in NSW and QLD even as I write has been declared a state emergency, named by authorities as “the most dangerous bush fire week ever seen” [3]. There are more than 100 fires across the country, a number of which have been described as “life-threatening, unprecedented and catastrophic [3].” So far the fires have destroyed 300 homes, and taken the lives of at least 4 people, with harrowing stories of narrow escapes and several people still missing [3, 4]. The worst is not over yet, with conditions worsening in various parts of the country. Join us in earnest prayer for God to intervene.

A young Christian family living in the mountains of Sydney returned home after a fire storm ravaged through their neighbourhood to discover that their house had been burnt to the ground – EVERYTHING is gone and they have no insurance. With tears streaming down their faces, they are clinging together, grateful that they still have each other and that God is their strength. Our hearts ache for them, and for others who have lost homes and loved ones in the fire. It was never God’s plan for us to suffer and experience pain, loss and death.

Meanwhile in another part of the world, France, Spain, and Italy are experiencing major flooding, with “danger to life” flood warnings being issued in the UK [5]. And it just seems like the other day (February 2019) that a record 1.4 metres of rain fell in Townsville, Australia, within a 2 week period resulting in destructive flooding, while Tasmania (just 3,000 km away) was experiencing its largest fire in centuries [6]. Our planet is indeed out of control!

Everyone is blaming the problems of the world on climate change.  Whether climate change is the cause or not, the fact is, the Earth is now 6,000 years old according to the Bible, and is fast nearing its use-by date. Quoting from Isaiah, “Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath. For the heavens will vanish away like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment…but My salvation will be forever” (Isaiah 51:6).

Quoting from Pr Doug Batchelor on the rise of natural disasters in the last days, he says, “This whole planet now is bearing the burden of six thousand years of sin. And it is literally convulsing, playing itself out into a spike of natural disasters. We are waiting for the word of deliverance [7].”

NATURAL DISASTERS – WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

Jesus will soon return on His final rescue mission for planet earth. Leading up to that event, the Bible says that among other signs, natural disasters and calamities will increase (Matthew 24). Quoting from Luke 21:8, “all these things are the beginning of birth pains.”

Our earthly homes and bodies may be destroyed, but “we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens” (2 Corinthians 5:1).

Whatever challenges, calamities or hardships you may be facing in your own life, cling to the words of Jesus:
“Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you, and if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there YOU may be also” (John 14:3).

As natural disasters increase around the planet, and more and more people are affected by them, let us find courage, HOPE, and strength in Jesus!  He knows the struggles you are going through, and He cares.  “You have seen my troubles, and you care about the anguish of my soul” (Psalm 31:7). “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

Let God’s promises fill your heart with peace and joy today. Fix your mind onto the beautiful plans God has for your future (Jeremiah 29:11,12). Take heart! Be strong! Be courageous!
