“The children of Amram were Aaron, Moses, and Miriam” (1 Chronicles 6:3).
The first place in the Bible where we see Miriam in action is beside the Nile River. After her mother placed Moses in the little ark and floated it at the water’s edge, young Miriam, who was possibly only seven years older than her baby brother, stayed within sight to see what would happen.
When the Egyptian princess discovered the baby and decided to adopt him, courageous Miriam rushed forward. She must have been breathless with excitement as she said, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?” (Exodus 2:7).
The princess quickly agreed, Miriam sprinted off to find her mother, and Moses was saved. It must have been a tough adjustment for the entire family—including Miriam—when Moses was given over to his royal adoptive mother. Miriam loved and missed her brother, but they would be reunited once again when, at the age of 80, Moses reappeared in Egypt to confront the Pharaoh and to secure the release of his people.
When the Israelites marched out of Egypt, Miriam joined with her brothers in leading the Hebrew people. Besides being a prophetess, she was very talented in music and poetry and, after their miraculous escape from the Egyptian army, Miriam led the women in a celebration of victory and praise to God on the banks of the Red Sea.
“Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took the timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. And Miriam answered them: ‘Sing to the Lord, for He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!’ ” (Exodus 15:20, 21).
How has the Lord triumphed in your life? Why not sing a song of praise to Him today?
Our God, may our hearts always praise You for delivering us from the bondage of sin.
