“Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?” (James 2:25).
When all was quiet, Rahab lowered the two Hebrew spies through an outside window on the Jericho wall. She advised them to run to the mountain and wait three days until the soldiers who were searching for them had returned to the city, and then go their way. The plan worked.
Rahab was confident that the Hebrews would keep their end of the bargain. But there was a condition to Rahab’s salvation.
The spies asked her to tie a scarlet cord in the window through which they had just escaped, as a sign to the Israelite army. As long as the cord stayed in the window and they remained inside, she and her family would be safe. If not, their blood would be on their own heads.
Rahab wasn’t taking any chances; she left the scarlet cord tied in the window, and probably checked frequently to make sure it was still there. She brought her loved ones to the safety of her home.
When the Hebrew soldiers came to Jericho, Joshua commanded them to destroy everyone and everything in the city except Rahab and those who were with her in the house. When the walls of Jericho fell, the two spies were sent to bring Rahab and her family out alive. The city was burned, but Rahab and her kin were saved.
Rahab experienced the astounding grace of God. Although she was a harlot living in a heathen city of idol-worshippers, God’s grace was avail- able to her. Not only was she forgiven and accepted into His family, Rahab even became an ancestor to the Saviour of the world!
The scarlet cord that saved Rahab symbolizes the scarlet blood of Je- sus that ensures salvation to every one of us who will receive it. Have you accepted His gift today?
Loving Saviour, thank You for giving Your scarlet blood that we might have life!
